Marisa always dreamed of being a mom, but she lacked nurturing examples from her own childhood and adequate knowledge of how to keep a baby safe. Tragically, her first baby died in a co-sleeping incident, so when she had her second child, the baby was taken into state custody. Marisa’s case manager referred her to Champions for Children’s Parents as Teachers program, where she was assigned a Parent Educator to visit her home on a regular basis and help prepare her to be a mom. Together, they worked to baby-proof the home, manage expectations around the baby’s development, and learn positive parenting techniques. With Champions’ help, Marisa’s hard work paid off: she regained full custody of her daug
hter after just one year, and mom and baby are happy, healthy, and safe.
