Meet Sonia, Parent Educator with Parents as Teachers

At Champions for Children, our Parents as Teachers program is dedicated to building strong families and supporting parents as teachers; the critical role they play during their child’s development. Through free, home visiting services, Parent Educators help parents gain skills that enhance developmental progress, learning, and health. Today, we’re proud to spotlight Sonia, one of our dedicated Parent Educators. Sonia’s passion for children and families shines through every visit and interaction with the families she serves.

For Sonia, the most rewarding part of working at Champions for Children is building meaningful connections with families and witnessing their growth over time. “It’s so rewarding to see parents gain confidence and children reach new milestones,” she shares. “Knowing that I can play a small part in supporting and encouraging families during these important years truly fills me with joy and purpose.”

When asked how her role makes a difference, Sonia describes it as empowering families. One moment that stands out in Sonia’s career was when a parent told her she finally felt confident as a mom because of her visits. The parent described how she now understands her child’s cues, enjoys reading and playing every day, and feels more connected as a family. “Hearing her voice filled with joy and gratitude reminded me why I do this work,” Sonia reflects. “Those moments of connection and empowerment can truly change a family’s future.” Sonia says, “Knowing that I can help strengthen their bond and make a lasting positive impact on a child’s growth and family life is what makes this work so meaningful to me.”

Parent Educators, like Sonia, are at the heart of the mission of Champions for Children. Parents as Teachers helps build the foundation on which families become stronger, healthier and more connected, and where children can thrive.

“On tough days, my colleagues have been there to listen and encourage me, which helps me stay positive and focused. My supervisors and directors have always been available to listen and help me solve problems when challenges come up. Knowing I can count on my teams’ support makes me feel valued and confident in my role.” – Sonia
