Summer Play – Keeping it Safe and Fun
Summer break is here — and while it may feel like a chaotic free-for-all, it can be a golden opportunity for growth, creativity, and connection.
Why Do Kids Need Free Time?
Unstructured play is one of the most powerful tools for child development. It fuels creativity, builds problem-solving skills, and helps children become independent thinkers. When children have time to entertain themselves, they learn to make decisions, explore their interests, and flex their imaginations.
That’s why it’s so important to make space in their day for self-guided fun — and to be ready for those inevitable “I’m bored” moments. A simple solution? Create a Bored Jar filled with quick and engaging activities like:
* Drawing with sidewalk chalk
* Going on a scavenger hunt
* Writing a story
* Riding bikes or scooters
* Helping with age-appropriate chores
Remember, free time isn’t wasted time — it’s where imagination thrives.
The Right Balance: Free Play and Structure
While kids need freedom, structure still plays a vital role — especially for children with anxiety, ADHD, or autism. A predictable routine offers a sense of security and helps children regulate their emotions and behavior.
Here are 3 simple ways to create a flexible summer routine:
1. Stick to a schedule – Keep regular wake-up, mealtime, and bedtime hours. Use a visual daily routine so kids know what to expect.
2. Plan predictable fun – Daily outings to the park, library, or pool give kids something to look forward to.
3. Set behavior goals – Choose a few positive behaviors to focus on and celebrate progress with praise or small rewards.
Structure = security = more smiles all summer long!
Keep Summer Fun and Safe
More time outside means more opportunities for injury — but with a little planning, you can keep the focus on fun. Here are three summer safety musts every parent should know:
* Helmet Safety – Helmets should be required for bikes, scooters, skateboards, and other wheeled play. Make sure they fit well and are age- and activity-appropriate (yes, adults too!).
* Water & Sun Safety – Always supervise children near water and avoid distractions. Dress children in SPF clothing, hats, and sunglasses—and don’t forget to reapply sunscreen!
* Hydration & Heat Protection – Remind children to drink water regularly and plan shaded breaks. In extreme heat, opt for shorter outdoor play sessions in lighter clothing.
