Pedro Serrano-Mejia recently graduated from the University of South Florida with a Master of Social Work. Prior to graduation, Pedro was awarded the National Association of Social Workers Florida Student of the Year Award. He says that he is “humbled and honored” to have received the award.

Pedro began his career as an intern with Champions for Children’s FRANC program while working toward his Bachelors in Social Work.

Since beginning with FRANC, Pedro transferred to working with CFC’s Positive Parenting Partnership (P3) and has been working as a Family Champion case manager. He describes his role with P3 as being a navigator of “resources and connector with families.” He also assists with general intake while welcoming participants into the program. Of his role with Champions, Pedro says, “My goal with Champions is to work alongside my co-workers to strengthen our community and the families that we impact.”

Pedro says that what he enjoys most about working as a Family Champion is having the ability to connect with families one on one. He recognizes the importance of offering families empathy and grace. Pedro says that the tools required for parenting are not “a one size fits all”, and he affirms that compassion is necessary to produce positive relationships.

When reflecting on his work, Pedro says he enjoys collaboration with his fellow Family Champions and Family Educators. “We are truly a big family that supports one another all the time.”

Pedro says that working at Champions has allowed him to build a network within his community. It has given him further understanding of community resources, and the impact of partnerships. He says he has been blessed to be able to work underneath mentors such as Nikki Daniels, CFC Associate Director, and Sinziana Bulcara, CFC Parenting Services Program Director.

Congratulations to Pedro for his achievement!
